Research

My research is multidisciplinary, crossing over into sociology and medicine, specifically orthopaedics and anaesthesia.

Over the next few months, I will be updating this page with my results, what I have learned and what more we can learn about pole dancers – our bodies, our mentality and our niche in this world.

Please note, I do not review studios. I dance to understand the experience through a student’s perspective in each studio. How does it feel to master a move on the first try? What pains, if any, do I have in my body from certain positions? What is my mood like after class and what is it about pole that creates this sense? These are the questions that I seek to answer from my personal experience on the pole and through interviews with teachers and students alike.

I am, however, looking for mentors in this endeavour, in particular professional dancers, researchers, graduate students and professors. If you can be of assistance, please contact me at melanie@poletheworld.com
